Knit hat

October 30, 2005

Knit hat
Originally uploaded by Maria in Toronto.

My sister liked the hat I made last week so much, that she asked me to make one for her. She told me the colours of Blue Sky Bulky that she wanted and luckily they had them at Lettuce Knit.
Tonight, while naked and watching a movie on TVO (The Bad Seed, 1956, amazing movie), I made her this hat.

I used the same pattern as with my blue hat and 10mm dpn with Blue Sky Bulky in gold and dark red.

News from Burrito Boyz

October 29, 2005

Yes ladies and gentlemen, for those of you who thought Burrito Boyz on Peter between Adelaide and Richmond was super crowded and it was a pity that they don’t have but 3 stools, especially now that it’s getting colder and it’s not easy to eat your burrito outside on the street I have good news:
There is a NEW location for Burrito Boyz. Yes, you heard it right, I went for dinner there last night, and it’s a bigger place, with some tables and chairs, they even have a “baño”. It is the same thing as the original Burrito Boyz, even the owner was there. MMMHHH, delicious. The new location is on Adelaide St. east of Duncan, north side.
What are you waiting for? go. now. eat burritos!

Notice to write a citizenship test

October 28, 2005

On November 9 at 8:30 AM I will write a test about my knowledge of Canada and the responsibilities and privileges of citizenship. …Iwill also be expected to demonstrate a knowledge of English or French.

Geez, I don’t know, how do I demonstrate that I know English? Do I know any English? Dammit, this is difficult…and so exciting!

I’m just wondering how long it takes after the writing of the test for the swearing ceremony and then… the marvelous, legendary party! (I just want to make clear that if it is during the Christmas season, the party will have to wait till January, Christmas is too crazy with parties and what not as it is, but don’t worry, the party will happen, sooner than we thought!)

The Little Prince

October 28, 2005

Yesterday, Clara gave me a present. She knows The Little Prince is one of my favourite books and she got me this:

It is so super cute. Now I’m just missing the Fox and the Sheep!
I actually think that even if it’s a book “for kids”, it has a lot of meaning that you don’t get as a kid, reading it as an adult you realize what a beautiful book it is. I really recommend that everyone who has the opportunity reads it.

The Bishop and the Belcher on Church St.?

October 28, 2005

as weird as it sounds, it’s about to happen. The Bishop and the Belcher is moving from Queen between John and Peter, to Church St and Hayden. They say the only thing that’s changing is the address, but the people visiting the bar are due to change for sure. Queen St. and Church St. are a totally different demographic.
I’m probably not gonna go much, if at all. It’s not that far from my place, but it’s far from the area I hang out. I live between the Queen and King streetcars, but to go to Church and Hayden, there’s not even a bus on Church. I would have to go on the streetcar, take the subway, and then walk back to Church.
Too bad, they have really good nachos. I’m gonna miss them.

Kinda sick

October 26, 2005

I don’t know what’s wrong with me. I’ve felt bad all day. I came back home from work at around 2:00, they practically kicked me out because I wasn’t feeling well (oh, such a difference with my previous job when they would just tell me to not let the disease be stronger than me and make me stay until the end or later).
I don’t have the sniffles or sneezing so it’s not a cold. But my whole body hurts, and I just woke up from a 2.5 hr nap and still feel like crap (but, of course, now I’m hungry). I hope it’s a one-day thing and not something like that virus that Jen got. But it very well could be, since I have no other symptom (OK, my whole body hurts a bit, that’s it).

Girl with a hoop

October 25, 2005

When I was growing up, my mother decorated my room with a Renoir: Girl with a Hoop. We also had Girl with a Watering Can, but my mom always told me that I looked like the Girl with a Hoop (and I kinda did, a little bit).
You grow accustomed to seeing the same paintings on the wall and never really pay much attention to them, I guess. I never remembered them much.

In 1999, I flew from London to Washington, for vacation. We went to the National Gallery of Art where there is an Impressionists room. My mom called me and showed me the original Girl with a Hoop by Renoir. I saw it there, hanging on the wall. I then remembered I had grown up seeing a copy of it every single day.
I cried.

Save the Date

October 24, 2005

On November 14. It’s my birthday. After work we’re all going for beer, chicken wings, nachos and all my favourite pub food. Save the date. I will send an email with more specifications.
Reader #1: “but Maria, it’s the last day of the pay period and I’ll be broke”
Maria: “Well, that’s why I’m telling you now before it’s even the start of the pay period and save for the end of it.”
Reader #2: “but it’s a Monday and I’m lazy and I don’t want to be tired for the week”
Maria: “You don’t have to get all drunk and whatnot, though it is allowed. I’ll be there at 5:30 and will probably stay there till about 9:30”
Reader #3: “but I have concert tickets for that night, the concert is at 8:00”
Maria: “As I said, I’ll be there at 5:30, so you can come early for a couple of pints, or pitchers, before your concert”
Reader#4: “but Maria, it says ‘after work’ and I finish work at 3:00/I don’t have a job… how will I know what time to be there?”
Maria: “I mean after normal people’s work schedules. You can be there since 3:00 for all I care, just be there”.

More details later, or send me an email and I’ll email you back with the place where we’ll be meeting.

Stashbusters

October 24, 2005

On Friday I joined a collective blog called Stashbusters. I am really interested in the project, since I have so much stash to knit and I need to motivate myself to sit and do it. For my introduction to Stashbusters I decided to start the Rumple Scarf. I bought this Hand Maiden kit at Needles and Pins during a trip that I made to London, Ont. on July 16 this year.

I casted on 27 stitches on 6 mm needles. This is the progress I made during the weekend. And of course I was naked while knitting the whole thing (OK, except during my subway ride to the hairdresser’s).

At the rate it’s going, I calculate it is going to take me about 2 weeks to finish it. I’m looking forward to it, since the weather is getting chilly.
